Academic courses are offered through the Social Work Department at Madras Christian College. Students are required to choose two courses that are a part of the department’s master’s program. In the past students have chosen from a variety of courses such as Human Rights and Advocacy, Gender and Society, Indigenous People and Tribal Development, and Psychiatric Social Work. Students are also required to take Exploring Indian Culture and Society and Conversational Tamil as part of their semester abroad. In addition to taking classes, students will be placed at a non-profit site in which they are to complete 100 hours of service. Field placement sites include Women in Need (WIN), the YWCA, SOS Children’s Villages International, Indian Welfare Community Organization, and a myriad of other sites.
