POE Study Abroad Guides
Subscribing to the curriculum integration philosophy that study abroad should fit into a student’s chosen course of study, Juniata allows students to apply courses they take abroad to their general education or POE requirements. This is possible because of our model of faculty-driven internationalization, which encourages close interdepartmental relationships with international partners. As a result, Juniata students in any field can gain facility in a foreign language, and study their field in that language at a partner site, as well as take advantage of opportunities in particular POEs with specific international partners, such as summer opportunities, globally-networked collaborations, and partner degrees.
When you think about study abroad, it is a good idea to raise the idea with your academic advisor early in your studies. This can help with course planning and selection Even if you decide relatively later in your Juniata experience to study abroad, it still might be possible. While it's true that any student can study abroad, certain POEs may have specific requirements that must be taken into consideration. The following guides were prepared by Juniata departments to help students and advisors in planning for study abroad. They provide advice and opportunities for study abroad for each of the four years of study towards that POE.
There is no hard and fast rule for when it is best to study abroad. Short-term programs are possible at any point. For longer experiences, Junior year is a typical choice since studying for two years beforeallows the student to take the fundamental courses in one’s academic discipline and to complete a healthy number of graduation requirements. Once this foundation is in place, study abroad should be a richer experience. In any case, you must apply to long-term study abroad through the Center for International Education by December 1 to study abroad the following academic year.
