Juniata College
Intensive English Program
ESL Tutoring Services

Free tutoring services are offered to all ESL students. The primary purpose for this program is to help students achieve success, higher understanding and better English skills in their ESL courses.

If Juniata students who are English Language Learners (ELL) need tutoring in a non-ESL course for language-based issues, arrangements can be made with the professor of that course and the Director of Intensive English Program. Priority, however, will be given to current ESL students in the Intensive English Program.

We encourage students taking courses outside the IEP to seek tutoring services through the Academic Services Office, especially if the student is having issues with content.

Policies:

1. The program is voluntary for all ESL students in good academic standing.

2. Students on academic probation may be required to use tutoring services.

3. IEP instructors may discuss with students the possibility of entering the tutoring program and will make a formal recommendation through email to the student and IEP Director.

      a. These students' applications will have priority if the availability of tutors is limited.

      b. If a student agrees with his/her instructor that having a tutor would be beneficial, the student should email the Director of the Intensive English Program with the information in the procedures section.

4. Students may apply for tutoring services on their own simply by emailing the Director of the Intensive English Program with the information in the procedures section.

5. The number of hours/week a student may use tutoring services will be no more than three, but may further be limited by demand of other students and/or availability of tutors.

6. If students are taking courses outside the Intensive English Program and need tutoring in those courses, we encourage them use the process of getting a tutor for those courses through Academic Support Services.

Procedures:

1. If you want to use the ESL tutoring services, email the IEP Director, Mr. Michael Beamer, with the following information:

2. Download, read, print, and sign the Tutoring Agreement, before your first tutoring session.

3. The IEP Director will electronically introduce you to your tutor. It is your responsibility to contact each other ASAP.

4. If you wish to stop your tutoring sessions, contact the IEP Director with the reasons for discontinuing. If you are on academic probation, you are required to continue tutoring.

Policies and procedures will be updated as required.
