You should bring enough money to purchase personal care items, clothing, postage, and to do laundry. You should not carry a large amount of cash. You should bring a credit card (Visa or MasterCard) that can be used in the United States. There are many times when you will need to use a credit card for on-line and telephone purchases like air and train travel tickets; telephone cards; etc. Many retail transactions will require a credit card.
