Weekend Courses and On-line Instruction at Juniata College
- ED 460 Linguistics for English Language Teachers (Feb. 22-24) online instruction until April 9) investigates the basic units of language and provides a framework for understanding English as a language system. Credit: 2
- ED 464 Advocacy for ESL: School, Family and Community (Apr. 11-12) will explore school-home-community connections, working with ESL students with special needs, federal and state requirements and resources for ESL programs and instruction. One weekend session. Credit: 1
- ED 461 Language Learning and Culture (May 16-18) examines the implications of language use and culture in a classroom context, the process of cultural adjustment, issues of racism, privilege and interaction with cultural and linguistic difference. Credit: 1
Four-week Intensive Experience at the Universidad de Otavalo, Ecuador
Two courses will be offered (in English) and will meet daily. A teaching practicum, language instruction and cultural interaction with a host family will be key learning experiences.
- ED 462 Language Acquisition and Cognition explores the process of language acquisition, bilingualism, and literacy development in second language learners. Credit: 3
- ED 463 Teaching ESL: Developing a Teaching Practice examines instructional approaches for developing oral and written language skills for K-12 students to help them succeed in inclusive classroom settings. Observation of teaching mentors and a supervised teaching practicum are included. Credit: 4
Complete the Program at Juniata College
- ED 465 Building a Professional Community of ESL Teachers (Aug 9-10) will focus on developing links between theory and practice, and will structure a forum for collaboration among the program participants using technology and resources of the TESL field. One weekend session. Credit: 1
