Study Philosophy Abroad
Philosophy students are strongly encouraged to study abroad in their junior year through the College Study Abroad Program. The following Juniata exchange partner universities have excellent programs in philosophy (instruction in English):
- The Philosophy Department at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom: Leeds is ranked in the world to 10 universities. Housed within Leeds' School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science which was recently ranked in the top 50 in the world by the QS world university rankings, Leeds' philosophy department is one of the largest, most dynamic, and highly regarded departments in the country. The department has thirty-five philosophers with an international standing in research across many areas, ranging from metaphysics & mind, philosophy of religion, history & philosophy of science, to aesthetics and ethics within the analytic philosophical tradition. Its programs in Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Biology, and Philosophy of Religion are among the strong philosophy programs worldwide based on the Philosophical Gourmet Report. Due to its large size of faculty, the department is able to offer more than forty variety of philosophy courses (they call "philosophy modules:) to its undergraduates each year (see the current modules taught). The school and department offer both undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Philosophy and the History and Philosophy of Science (HPS), as well as specialised PhD supervision across a wide range of topics. Juniata College sent out several philosophy students (Joseph Motz, class of 2002, Steven Leety, class of 2003, Ryan Hamilton, class of 2008, Tucker Good, class of 2013, and John Kyle, class of 2013) to study philosophy at Leeds in the past with great success.
- Philosophy Department at the university of Otago, New Zealand. Founded in 1869, University of Otago is New Zealand’s first and finest university. It is recognized as New Zealand’s most research-intensive university and as a world-class research institution. Philosophy has a strong presence in the university's research profile. The research activities from their eight philosophers are consistently ranked at top three most productive disciplines at the university. The department at Otago is certainly one of the best philosophy departments in New Zealand (maybe top one or two). It offers high quality philosophy degrees at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels (master and Ph.D.). The department maintains about 25-30 philosophy courses (they call them "papers") covering all topics within the analytical tradition. Those courses match well with JC philosophy courses and can be easily transferred to JC philosophy credits. Our department sent out two philosophy students (Jake Weller and Ken Noga, class of 2011) to study philosophy at Otago in 2010. Both of them truly enjoyed their stay there.
- Philosophy Program at the University of Waikato, New Zealand. The program has seven philosophers and offers about 25-30 different philosophy courses (which they call "papers") within the analytical tradition. It offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees (master and Ph.D.) in philosophy.
