Hothouse

Inspired by “Page to Stage” programs at regional theatres such as the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, and La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, Hothouse continues its ongoing November tradition at Juniata, where we showcase readings and open rehearsals of plays and musicals being developed by regional, and national playwrights, librettists, and composers. Juniata student work will be featured in writing and acting projects over the two-week development period. Plays developed here have brought students to theatre festivals in NYC, and Dublin, and will continue to be Juniata's face of new work development in the professional world.

This November, The Gravity Partners present a new play adapted from the seminal work on transhumanism and democracy by Dr. James Hughes: Citizen Cyborg. The play examines the complex interplay between emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, stem cell research, and cloning, and the lagging liberal democracies that will be needed to ensure that these radical new discoveries will not simply fall into the hands of the very wealthy. Likewise, as new forms of intelligence are evolved, how do we ensure that rights of “persons” are widely encompassed? As Dr. Hughes writes, “How can democracy embrace transhuman diversity, when the gap between the rich and poor continues to widen, and there is so much discrimination against women and people of color.”
