I just want to keep students in the loop on a couple of technology updates that will be happening over the winter break so that you are not caught off-guard when you return for the spring semester.
The biggest change will be that Microsoft Office will no longer be available on Appserver. Unfortunately, Microsoft has changed how their licensing works with this type of server and we are no longer able to make Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, Publisher, and Outlook available this way. It will still be available on campus lab machines and loaner laptops. If you were making use of Microsoft Office on Appserver before, here are a couple of alternative solutions:
- Purchase a copy from Journey ED (http://www.journeyed.com/select) starting at $99
- Use a cloud-based solution such as Google Docs
- Use a free Office package that can be loaded on your own laptop such as OpenOffice
- Use a lab computer that has Microsoft Office loaded
Another change you will notice is that the computers in the library are being upgraded from Appserver clients to Apple Mac Minis. This is in order to continue to provide access to Microsoft Office once it is removed from Appserver, in addition to other software that these computers will have.
Over break we will be cleaning profiles from lab computers and running basic updates. This means that any data you have saved on a lab computer will be cleaned off, so it is important that you move that data to your own storage either on your U drive or other media of some type.
Please feel free to contact me if you have questions on these updates or any other technology issues you are noticing.
