Thanks for responding. I don't think that sounds like it would be the best situation for Skippy. If your brother works that much Skippy would be alone most of the time, as he is now. I think Skippy would be fine around the other dog (once they got acquainted) and any large farm animals. Not so sure about say, chickens. My main concern is that he'd be alone so much though. He would need to be crated as I think alone in the house for that long he might have 'accidents' and he really isn't built to stay outside in our winter weather.
A piece of advice, that you're free to ignore of course: giving a pet often doesn't work out as wonderfully as we would hope. I didn't believe it until I got my son a kitten one Christmas. He wanted a kitten but he always resented that he didn't get to pick out his own. It's also an ongoing expense that the gift recipient may not want or be ready for. Food isn't that much but regular shots, exams, flea meds, and heart worm medications add up. Then heaven forbid they get sick or injured. Just food for thought.
I'm not looking for any money, just a better situation for Skippy than he has now.
