Connecting a Playstation 3 to the internet

I just don't know how to do it. I figured the Wifi would be too complicated, so I didn't even bother. I just got an ethernet cable, and it's all hooked up, both the cable and ports on both end are functional, but for some reason, it just won't let me connect. There are no tutorials for connecting PS3, only 360 and Wii. I just got Borderlands 2 and it's miserable playing solo, I want to get online.

Anybody got any ideas?
