Dear Friends,

We finished a difficult giving year in 2008-2009 with strong results, providing financial support through the Juniata Scholarship Fund to more than 400 academically qualified Juniata students with need. Now more than ever the reason for the Juniata Scholarship Fund stands tall, assisting students in these tough economic times.

Juniata nearly reached its fundraising goals this past year, but we fell short of achieving strong results based on the percentage of alumni who actually make a gift of any size to Juniata. Alumni giving participation is important in more ways than the obvious ones. For example, foundations and corporations that provide millions of dollars in grants to colleges like Juniata use alumni participation in their formulas for determining who will get their support. Historically, strong alumni participation has allowed Juniata to compete with the big guns in higher education and cause us to stand out from the crowd. However, declining alumni participation (this past year at just below 30%) will make it harder for Juniata to continue to compete.

So, I am asking every Juniata alum, especially you if you haven't made a gift in the past, to think back to the strong academics, the relationships with faculty, the friendships, and the traditions that make Juniata what it is -- and make a gift to Juniata. A gift of any size.

One average Juniata Scholarship Fund award is $2,300. A gift at or above that level provides membership in Juniata's President's Circle. This recognition level was created specifically for JSF because it is the top funding priority at Juniata. Gifts at this leadership level are certainly appreciated, but all gifts are meaningful, and your gift is crucial if we are to remain competitive with our peers.
