Program of Emphasis: Media Communication and Writing
Hometown: Baltimore, MD
High School: Baltimore City College High Sc
Why I chose to attend Juniata: I chose Juniata because I was looking for personal attention. I wanted to be known by my first name in classes and I feel that would have not been possible if I attended a big university. I was looking for a change from my hometown and I felt that Juniata offered me what I was looking for in terms of small class sizes, the community feel, and the openness between the student and the professor. I love that I am not just a number but I am a member of the community at Juniata.
Clubs and Organizations: African American Student Alliance- President (Fall 2011-Present) Eagles Ambassador- Member (Fall 2010-Present) Plexus- Member and Secretary (Fall 2010-Fall 2012) Student Government- Freshman Class President, Sophomore Cultural Representative, Junior Class Secretary (Fall 2010-Present)
Most Interesting Class: The most interesting class that I have taken this year is my Digital Storytelling class taught by Dr. Donna Weimer. The class set up is very independent where we are creating our own stories in a way that can be constructed for a digital format. I really think that the class has offered me a way to think if I really want to go into creative writing as a job field and how I can create different stories for audiences in a digital format. I love script writing and I am happy that I got to experience that in the class!
Favorite Faculty Member: Professor Cynthia Merriwether-DeVries has not only broadened my experience as a minority student but has opened my eyes to a variety of ways of engaging the world to learn about culture. She has made a tremendous impact on my life because I would have never thought that I would be the President of a club focused on issues regarding African Americans and the role in society. I am grateful for her presence at Juniata and I am happy that I have gotten to know her on a personal level as a club leader. She has taught me organization, communication, and leadership skills that I feel that I could carry for the rest of my life at Juniata. All in all, my experience with Cy has been outstanding and I am looking forward to building a lifelong friendship with her after graduation.
Thank you!
The Juniata Scholarship Fund has given me the opportunity to further my education at Juniata and provided me the chance of a lifetime to get out of my comfort zone and head to school that I was unfamiliar with but ended up loving my experience here. I am so thankful for the continued support from the donors of the Class of 1964 because without them I would not be able to afford to attend Juniata on my own. It has shown me the importance of giving back and the idea that I will always be a Juniata student even after I leave.
Gratefully,
