Program of Emphasis: Biology
Hometown: Altoona, PA
High School: Altoona Area Sr High School
Why I chose to attend Juniata: I chose to attend Juniata because of the small class sizes and great science program. It's nice to know that here I am not just some number, but a student, person, and member of a great community. The idea of liberal arts education is too great to pass up because it allows me, if I so choose down the road, to combine several of my interests into one POE.
Clubs and Organizations: I am a member of Catholic Council where I attend meetings and am a chairperson to this year's 30 Hour Famine. I am also a member of AAUW where I attend meetings when guest speakers come to visit the school.
Most Interesting Class: In all actuality, my most interesting class this year is CWS. I do not have what most freshman deem an "easy A" course; however, I have learned so much more than all of the other classes combined. My professor goes out of his way to ensure that we figure out how to write not only efficiently, but to an appropriate audience. With meaningful assignments, he forces us to take a greater control to how much we do or don't learn. He is preparing us not only for our first semester of college, but for higher education down the road.
Favorite Faculty Member: Two professors here have made a difference in my life. Professor W. David Wilkins has taught me a valuable life lesson through this year's work load: it's all about process, not the end result. In high school, I was so focused on what the final grade was that I didn't care if I actually learned or not. He has shown me that one cannot think like this in college if one wishes to be successful. By structuring his assignments the way he does, he is preparing us not only for our first year of college, but for higher education down the road. He has said, "If one wishes to write something great, one must have something great to say first." That has really hit home. Another professor here that has made a difference is Dr. Hark. He has shown me that I can do anything I set my mind to. Despite having a large class size (Organic Chemistry), he cares a great deal about his students and will help them in any way possible.
Thank you!
Dear Class of 1966,
I would like to take this time to extend my thanks for receiving this scholarship. Everything received is greatly appreciated as it helps fund my education-a priceless investment. It's so nice to know that members of the Juniata community care so much as to help current students like me.
Sincerely,
Anna Bistline
