Monica McGrath

Program of Emphasis: Geology

Hometown: Warrington, PA

High School: Central Bucks High School Sout

Why I chose to attend Juniata: When I first came to Juniata College on an open house visit my first impressions was there is no way I could come to this school. It wasn't until I was able to talk to students and professors that I fell in love with the school. That is why I came to Juniata because I felt that I would get the personalized education I needed.

Clubs and Organizations: Treasurer for the Andrew Lawson Geological Society CIS rep for A-board

Internship: In the summer of 2012 I was a Material Science Intern at RJ Lee Group. At RJ Lee I worked in the material science department which was in charge of testing construction and building materials. I worked with concrete, coal and other materials. We complete strength testing, combustible content, and asbestos content in the various materials.

Research Participation: "A Petrographic Study of Vein Mineralization in the Central Pennsylvania Region." --This was the title of the research I presented at Liberal Arts Symposium in Spring 2012. I will also be presenting a different project this spring at the Geological Society of America Northeastern Sectional Meeting but that project does not have a title yet. What I have been doing since last spring is looking at quartz crystals in rock veins for growth patterns and oil.

Most Interesting Class: This year the most interesting class has been Writing Across the Media. This class is outside my major but I am taking it as a FISHN' credit. It is taught by Hannah Bellwoar in the English department and has been teaching me about social media, blogging and how to sell yourself on the internet. It has been extremely interesting because social media has become such a big part of everyday life.

Favorite Faculty Member: There have been so many who have made a difference in my Juniata career. Larry Mutti, who is my research advisor, has really pushed me to my limits in his classes and in my research. Matt Powell, who is just an amazing professor, has really taught me how to think instead of what to think. Plus Valerie Rennell, Diane Ross, Tracie Patrick, and Sonja Kypers from the Financial Planning office who I have worked for and with for the past 3 years. They are all so supporting, loving and encouraging people.

Honors Received: My internship was sponsored by the Juniata College Super Internship Fund. My internship was also reported in the President's Report magazine as well as being picked for September's internship of the month. Last yeas I was inducted into Sigma Gamma Epsilon which is the Geology Honor Society.
