Samantha Goebel
Program of Emphasis: Wildlife Conservation
Hometown: Rileyville, VA
High School: Luray High School
Why I chose to attend Juniata: I chose Juniata because of the excellent Environmental Science department. I transferred to Juniata because I was looking for a more challenging curriculum that would prepare me for the professional field.
Clubs and Organizations: I participated in the Bike Club by going on different mountain biking excursions. Also, I participated in the Anthropology and Archaeology Club by helping organize an international dinner and by going to club meetings.
Internship: I had an internship this summer in the Shenandoah National Park. I assisted with the Fish and Wildlife Department by collecting data. We collected data using electrofishing methods.
Travels Abroad: I am currently studying in the Galapagos Islands. Every class that I have taken has been hands on. I am studying in the perfect environment for conservation. We are currently learning about the National Park Programs in Ecuador and what is being done to protect the native species of the Galapagos.
Most Interesting Class: Mountain Geology was an excellent class. We viewed many geological structures first hand. We summited Cotopaxi volcano, a composite cone. We hiked around Quilotoa, an Andean caldera. We studied the basaltic Volcan Chico in Isabela island. The professor spent much of the time lecturing us in the field so we could feel, touch, and have a better understanding of different rock compositions.
Favorite Faculty Member: Sharon Yohn was an incredible professor. I had her for Inorganic Chemistry I & II last year. She is very supportive and always available if you have a question. She ties her curriculum to the student's specific field. She related chemistry to environmental sciences and geology. Her coursework was very relevant to my studies, challenging, and interesting.

Thank you!
Thank you very much for your support. I would not be able to afford to study at Juniata College without your assistance. Juniata has opened many opportunities for me. This semester, I am studying abroad in the Galapagos Islands. This experience has opened my eyes and I am thankful to have this opportunity.
Sincerely,
