Program of Emphasis: Conflict and Communication Studies
Hometown: Delhi, NY
High School: Delaware Acad & Cntrl School
Why I chose to attend Juniata: I was hoping to attend a small liberal arts college. I wanted to be known to the professors, instead of being a number in thousands of students. I was unsure of what direction I wanted to head into, so the opportunities to find out what I really enjoyed and valued helped me out a lot in where I am today.
Clubs and Organizations: Pax-O: active participant CMC: secretary (senior year), active participant all three years Dance Ensemble: Secretary (senior year), active participate all three years Step: Active participant for two years Spanish Club: member JAB: member
Internship: Violence Intervention Program Intern, in NY. I did clerical work as well as sat in on group sessions, as well as individual sessions with clients who were victims to domestic violence. On occasion, I also went to court with these clients and one of the court advocates.
Travels Abroad: Derry (Londonderry), Northern Ireland. Words cannot explain how much I enjoyed studying abroad, from the culture, to traveling and the people I met. I enjoyed the classes, but the history and all that I have learned will be with me for the rest of my life.
Research Participation: Communication and Gender. This past semester I started a research project focusing on interruption between genders. I mainly focused on females and males, trying to identify which gender interrupted more. I am continuing this research into next semester, doing the field work then, while this past semester I did a lot of background research on previous studies on interruptions.
Most Interesting Class: Doing an independent study, or research project, was the most interesting class I have taken this semester. This is because I was able to choose what I wanted to focus on, pick all the literature I was to read, and learn something new about a topic I was truly interested in. I am very glad Juniata offers independent studies to students.
Favorite Faculty Member: Lynn Cockett has been a huge influence on these past two years. I had multiple classes with her last year, did an independent study with her this past semester, and am taking more of her classes in the coming semester. She has been someone I can rely on to go to with academic and personal help if need be. She has opened my eyes up to all this academic research, and helped me conduct research all myself, as well as realize that 20 page papers are not as hard as I set them out to be. Without her support and encouragement, I wouldn't be where I am today. Celia Cook Huffman has also been a huge influence on my career here, although not as much these past couple semesters, because I was abroad and she was taking the year off. She has provided me with the best advice and has helped me with an professional and academic questions I have had during the years and about my future. I could not have been as successful and happy as I am without the help of these two faculty members.
Thank you!
Dear Class of 1954,
I cannot thank you enough for your support for making it possible for me to attend Juniata College. As a senior, I have grown to realize the importance of a liberal arts education and the small and family oriented community Juniata has to offer. I loved Juniata at the start of my freshman year, and my love has grown stronger over the years because of the relationships I have made, whether on Juniata campus or abroad in another country. Without your help, I could not have done this. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you.
