Why I chose to attend Juniata: I chose to attend Juniata College because it wasn't like other campuses that I had visited out of state. In the other campuses, students are competing against one another to be the best, but in Juniata faculty and students nurture each other so that they can be the best individual they can possibly be. And Juniata College was the first college to give me hope in the possibility that I could survive college.
Most Interesting Class: The most interesting class I have taken this year is College Writing Seminar because it was fun seeing my papers develop and with it my grades for each individual essay. I saw progress in my writing skills and progress in my confidence that even though things may not be the best at first, the only thing I can do is take it one step at a time. In this case, one essay at a time.
Favorite Faculty Member: I would say Professor Baran because when I first met him I was crying my eyes out because my mom had left for home an hour before and I felt really alone and scared. He kept telling me that everything would be fine and heard how scared I was of my first semester of college and accommodated my schedule so that it wouldn't overwhelm me. I guess he gave me hope in the possibility that I can pursue anything that I wanted to and that I wasn't alone when it came to the idea of being homesick. He told me that to feel better I needed to get myself busy and I did, and it has made all the difference.
The importance of receiving this scholarship to me is that it kind of gave me the hope in proving myself. It gave me hope in pursuing a higher education and take what happens in my life in my own hands. The scholarship not only means the whole world to me, but also it means that somebody believes in me and my capabilities. Without this financial support I wouldn't have been able to go to college out of state and I would still be in California. And that goes against my dreams because the reason why I wanted to leave my state is because I wanted to develop my own independence and knowledge in life and come back to help provide for the people who made me the person I am today.
