Campus Opinions

New Clock on Campus: Timeless or Tasteless?

On Sept. 14, Juniata College installed a clock in the quad, sparking mixed opinions. Students share their thoughts on the new addition:

Amanda Epstein ‘13 Sea Cliff, N.Y.:

When I first discovered that we were going to be getting a clock on campus, I was overjoyed. I was so excited because there was just this empty patch right there. There was a flagpole, there was a tree, but we didn’t have any major timepiece in the middle of campus. Everybody knows that a timepiece is the most important part of campus life because you want to be on time for things. Having a clock is just reminding you, “This is the time! This is when things are happening!”

Anshu Chawla ‘14 Fairport, N.Y.:

Honestly, it’s top-heavy. It should have been put in the center of the quad.

Lauren Hitzhusen ‘14 Houston, Texas:

It reminds me of Narnia. And I’m sure it will look really magical in the wintertime.

Ben Tansi ‘14 Wrentham, Mass.:

Well, here’s my complaint. It stays in exactly the same place, and then moves every minute, which means that it’s probably set to some kind of timer and there aren’t actually any gears in it. It’s not a nice technical one, like those fancy ones you find on your wrist. Ideally it could be an old-school wind-up one. That would be pleasing.

Cheryl Mariani ‘12 Delran, N.J.:

I like it. It’s elegant. Some people have said it doesn’t fit in, but I don’t think it contrasts that badly.

I agree with Anshu, too top heavy. The clock itself is nice looking but the part holding it up just doesn’t match well. But the clock is growing on me, it’s nice knowing how late to class I am going to be.
