Breast Cancer Awareness Activities: Informative or Insensitive?

The Juniata chapter of Colleges Against Cancer sponsored several events for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, including the Pink Ribbon Banquet, Boobie Bingo, and a bra fashion show. The activities were for a good cause, but students had mixed opinions on the tastefulness of the events:

Veneka Mahomva ’15 Republic of South Africa:

I thought it was cool. The only thing that I wasn’t so sure about was the bra thing. I know I’m very conservative, but it was just awkward. But people had fun, and it got the point across.

Charlene Granier  Lille, France:

It was really good. I knew about breast cancer before, so it was not new, but it was interesting.

Abbey Servello ’14 Altoona, Pa.:

It’s ridiculous. It’s just objectifying women. It’s not about breast cancer awareness anymore.

Tom Jordan ’14 Derwood, Md.:

I thought they were quite tasteful. Especially the bra show. That was good fun.

Zachary Lemon ’14 New Bloomfield, Pa.:

I don’t think it’s helpful. Everyone’s aware of breast cancer. I didn’t think it was distasteful, it was just a waste of time. I think it’s pretty disrespectful toward women.
