Student Sentiment on Football Feat: Reactions to Dramatic Win

The Juniata football team pulled off a narrow win against rival Susquehanna University on November 12, leading to much celebration.  After this unexpected end to a 21-game losing streak, students give their opinions on the team’s victory:

Valeriya Smithka ’14 Silver Spring, Md.:

To be honest, I didn’t pay much attention before we won. I think it’s great, but we shouldn’t let it go to our heads.

Deanna Good ’14 Cresson, Pa.:

I’m not much of a football person. I think it’s not a big deal.

Aaron Wallace ’12 Cockeysville, Md.:

It was exciting, especially when we stormed the field. It’s exciting that we actually won one.

A student who chose not to have his or her name published:

I think we should cut the team. It’s just dragging the college down, and it takes up space and money.

Molly Lewis ’14 Pittsburgh, Pa.:

Yay for us! But can you do it twice?

The game was a huge win for the team and a real morale-builder, especially for the senior players. The support of other JC team members (notably baseball and wonen’s soccer) in the stands was remarkable. To those who don’t understand the value of this win, just think of how hard the players work day in and day out for the love of the game. Little glory, and certainly no money or perks, but with passion and camraderie that can only be found in a team sport. Thanks to Coach Launtz for bringing integrity back to the program…more wins will not be far behind.

Congrats Juniata Football and Coach Launtz! This is just the beginning, we have a whole season infront of us for 2012 and I believe that the Eagles can do big things! They are losing a great group of seniors, but the other guys on the team will just have to step up. Keep up the good work! Champions are made in the off-season.

Whoever is the person who believes the football team should be cut, I’m curious how you can say they are dragging the college down, when they have the biggest alumni support out of all the other sports. So many alums come back on homecoming to watch the football game. They also attract majority of the students to their games on Saturday. As far as it being a waste of space, this football team provides opportunities for men to come together as one and work for a common goal. It teaches you discipline, hard work, how to handle adversity, and many other things. It’s sad that you don’t see that.

Excuse me Mr. /Mrs. whoever you are ‘who chose not to have his or her name published’ I got news for you…..If you are going to say that demeaning of a comment you should man up and publish who the hell you are. We are in college now and if you have a certain view on something then attach your name to it but if not don’t bother comment if you can’t stand by your word!

Wanna know how much money it loses?? Absolutely none. If you did some actual research, you would realize that the football team makes (estimate) about 600,000 on the low end a year. Not bad for a college that is heavily reliant on tuition dollars. As for the win I think its great. I really hope coach launtz and the staff and team members can keep it going into next year! Congratulations to everyone on the team. I’ve seen how hard you work for it, and I bet thats not even half of it.

The game verse Susquehanna was the best game I have ever been a part of in 12 years of football. It was a total team victory in every part of the game. To the person who wishes to remain anonymous, I think you are a coward. If you are going to say something why not own up to it and check your facts. Juniata football is a tradition at this institution. It has had both its ups and its downs, and while lately we have had many more downs then ups, it will be turned around. I am not sure how you think it is bringing the college down. And I am sure it is not taking any money away from anything that you are a part of. Own your words, and Go Eagles.

I’m so glad that JCFB finally pulled out a win this season, and am even more ecstatic to the seniors who put in four years of hard work and never quit. Great job guys, what a way to go out.

I say, cheer it up! We won a game, that’s the point right? Everyone that attends the football games, loves them…fans, cheerleaders, students and players. Let’s go JC!

These guys work their butts off every day. I think the win was well deserved and I cannot believe that anyone would be as rude as that anonymous person to say that the team is a waste. The entire team shows way more heart than most other athletes here at Juniata; they go out and try game after game. I admire every athlete on the team. Congrats guys!!

I think it is awesome that the team won. Congrats guys! It is a big deal to come back from no wins and proving that you guys can do it. You worked hard and you got it. Just because you aren’t a football person doesn’t mean you need to diss it and make some bad opinions on what to do about it. They won be happy for them. We can’t just cut a team for not winning. Once again congrats guys and I’m proud of you all.

Alright person with no name!! So what our boys haven’t been doing that great, as far as I have seen they pour their hearts our for the team. When you talk to them, the team means a lot and its a family to them. As goes for most teams on campus, they become family. I’m glad to see the seniors get a win and one against the rivals too. Good Job boys, I’m with you!!

While it is good the team won, almost any team will get a win once in a while. So one win in over two seasons is nothing to get all hyped up about. If they win more games next season and the following season, then they can say something has changed for the better. As for how much money the team makes, $600,000 is more than optimistic. If every member of the team was paying to come to Juniata just to play football, then that would be an accurate number, but after taking out the amount of tuition that goes into running the school, barely any is left to say football brings in money. And ticket sales in no way make $600,000. As for bringing a group of men together to work for a common goal, they are hardly what could be called “together”. Swearing up a storm is not a good way to leave a good impression either. Cutting the sport seems to be a not-so-terrible possibility to me.

Anonymous you are most certainly entitled to your own opinions. And if you chose to remain so that is neither here nor there. I am or maybe was a senior on the 2011 football team. And we were a family. For four years we have sweated and bleed on the practice and game fields. Was it always nice and peachy… no. But I ask you what family does not have its dysfunctions. Dysfunctions are some of the things that drive families. And while you may see it as an issue I ensure you it is not. The dysfunctions are merely obstacles that a team must get over to become closer together. The swearing is merely a fact of football. Have you ever watched a game on TV and see the coaches and players mouthing curses that if they were audio the America public would blush. So I would not read to much into that. As far as whether or not the team makes money I can not say. But I ask you again should we cut every club and program that receives money from the school that does not intern make money for the college. I think not. But alas this argument is not going to go any where. Clearly you have your biases and I have mine. So in the words of the immortal legend Ron Burgundy, “Lets agree to disagree.” GO EAGLES!!

I’m glad to see our boys’ hard work pay off, especially for our Seniors. I see the alumni pour in every week we have a home game to watch. Our football program doesn’t only bring the current J.C. students together, it bridges the gap and brings the alumni together with us.
Good job boys.

Of course if they only came for football and payed just to play it would make sense. However, when you view the retention rate of previous football players, you would notice they all transfer. Also, should you ask these students whether they come here because it’s Juniata or because they were asked to play football you would see they in fact, came here for football. So while they are not paying just to play football, there are let’s say instead of 65, 50 students here that would otherwise NOT be here of it weren’t for football. As a result, there tuition dollars are gone. And as a result, Juniata loses 600,000 dollars. I love this school. What I don’t love is when people bash parts of my school. Especially when, I’m assuming, you attend the same institution. Of course no one could know, apparently your name is a mystery.

They have won 3 games in the past 5 years. I’m fairly sure this is correct but with the new website football has conveniently left out past records. Enough said.

JC football players, your thoughtful and insightful comments on this blog bring credit to you, your coaches and JC as a whole. Your commitment to your team in the face of tough odds and lots of losses is a lesson to be learned by the nay-sayers. Yes, students may choose a school because of a sports program in addition to everything else the school offers, particulary in D3 where one is not paid to play the game. It’s called recruiting, and it’s a consideration for every college athlete. JC has reason to be proud of these men, especially the seniors. They have shown what they’re made of and have put team, school and commitment above the glory of winning. Coach Alt instilled it, and Coach Launtz will continue it.

Haha you are quite hilarious lebron anonymous, or whoever the hell you wish to be other than yourself. It all goes back to your first comment which was the football team is a waste of space and money. Mr. Russell Gray has just proven that if anything, having football regardless of the record is beneficial for the school financially. Other people who have commented have stated that many people both in town and students go to the games every Saturday. So I guess I’m not seeing how the football program is dragging the college down. Maybe you should come up with a better way to argue your point. Again I’m also assuming you are a student here but you choose to be a coward and not say who you really are.

All men/women have their own opinion. I’m glad that we go to such a school that allows every opinion from every student that attends this college to be heard. The fact is that this person has voiced their opinion. Call them a coward for posting as anonymous? That is for your interpretation. Everyone knows my opinion on the matter. But this is not the point here. The said person’s opinion will not take away from the accomplishment of the victory from the whole team, coaching staff, and myself. We have put in a lot of hard working hours, both mentally and physically. Are we proud of the way the season went? We all expected more and it did not go the way we intended. The win against Susquehanna was amazing in so many ways. It gave me my first college victory and gives us something to build off of in the upcoming future. This opinion that believes the football team is a waste is only helping us. We will use this as fuel and we will work even harder now to prove to people that this team means something to us, our families, alum, and to the whole college. This team is a family, everyone one of these guys are my brothers and I would do anything for them without hesitation. This is something that not many people get to experience. All this team needs is each other, the coaching staff, and all that really are 100% behind us. You can bet the comment about the team needing to be cut will be posted in the locker room and visible for all of the team members to motivate us in the upcoming future. Thanks for even more motivation than we already had. I appreciate you and your comment. Hope to see you at the games next year….whoever you may be.
