Speed-dating for Relay for Life
A speed-dating event for Juniata students will be held on Feb. 29, in Sill Boardroom in the von Liebig Center for Science. All proceeds will go towards Relay for Life. Tickets will be $2 if they are purchased before the event, and tickets at the door will be $3. Speed-dating will be from 8 to 10 p.m., and it will be a good opportunity for college students to have some fun while contributing to a good cause. I interviewed a member of the Relay for Life team responsible for running this event, sophomore Stephanie Scavone, of Wapwallopen, Pa.:
Can you tell me a little more about Relay for Life?
Relay for Life is a charity organization that benefits the American Cancer Society. Here on campus, we have different Relay for Life teams who raise money up until the actual event. During the actual Relay for Life event, each team has a table, and a member of each team must be walking at all times during the day.
How did your team come up with the speed-dating idea?
Our first idea was to do powder puff football. However, another group is already doing that, so our team is helping them with the T-shirts. My roommates and I decided on the speed-dating idea after that.
How can people purchase tickets before the speed-dating event?
People who want to purchase tickets in advance can just send two dollars in an envelope with their name on it to my campus mailbox by February 28, the day before the event.
Do you have any goals or expectations for the event?
At first, my team didn’t really know how people would respond. However, people seem to be really excited about the speed-dating idea, and 35 people have already responded.
What are some other Relay for Life fundraisers coming up?
I know there will be a volleyball game, and there should be an “Are You Smarter than a JC Professor?” event also.
