The third generation iPad is a tablet computer designed and developed by Apple Inc. The iPad 3 serves as a platform for media, films, music, computer games, and web content. Compared to the iPad 2, the iPad 3 has a faster GPU and superior screen quality.Wei-Chung Wang, assistant professor of economics, talks about the iPad 3.
Is the new iPad a upgrade or an innovation?
I believe the iPad 3 is an upgrade. The iPad causes problems for application developers when they change the resolution of their screens. As an application developer myself, I know we need to retune the applications to adhere to new resolutions. It is important to pay attention to customer feedback in the Apple app store. If customers are unhappy with the applications on the new iPad, they will let you know in the review section and your quality status will drop.
What is different about the new iPad?
I appreciate that Apple provides a higher resolution on the iPad 3. This makes it better for reading. Although it reads a lot better, the operating system did not change. It seems like the iPad 3 has the same processor but is heavier and warmer than the iPad 2.
Do you believe this upgrade is a good strategy?
I think Apple’s strategy is smart. They are not going to do too much. The iPad is very successful right now so why would they want to change it? The iPad is leading the market.
How does the iPad 2 compare to the iPad 3 and other tablets?
The iPad 2 costs $399 and the iPad 3 costs $499 which is a 20 percent difference. The tablet market is becoming very competitive. There are little things manufacturers are trying to do to differentiate themselves. Samsung has a new phone called the Galaxy Note with a 5.3-inch screen. Ipads have a 9-inch screen and iPhones have a 3.5-inch screen. Samsung is trying to find a new market segment so consumers can use a tablet and phone at the same time.
Will Apple maintain their market place?
The phone and tablet market is competitive. I think Apple is still leading in respect to tablets however. The phone market is very competitive because there are many types of cell phones. I do not see other tablets being comparable to the iPad and I see the iPad maintaining its strength in the market place.
