Naval Analysis: Science in Service of History
Posted: February 27, 2012
This past summer Juniata chemist Richard Hark spent time analyzing the coat of British naval hero Lord Horatio Nelson in the conservation studio of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich in England. The slideshow shows Hark and colleagues Boris Pretzel, Nicola Yates, head of NMM textile conservation, and Betty Sacher, head of preventative conservation at NMM, using instruments like a small vacuum cleaner and a portable reflectance spectrophotometer to obtain baseline readings for the uniform to see if the uniform’s color has faded.
