currents is the newest online resource at Beeghly Library. The pages here provide a quick and convenient way to learn more about the materials other than circulating books and periodicals housed in the library.
In Special Collections, you'll find information about rare books and historical documents housed at Beeghly.
The Juniata College Archives is home to both primary documents and published materials related to the history of the college and the Juniata community.
The Film Archives is a project in development at the library; check back later this fall for more information.
The Regional History pages provide virtual exhibits on topics relevant to the Juniata Valley, including the French and Indian War and 19th century engravings of the area. Links to the region's county historical societies and other sites that might be of interest to researchers are also available.
currents merges content from the library's original special collection and archives pages with that of "Currents of the Juniata Valley," a regional history project that began in 2002 and was supported by both the college and members of the community.
The mission of the project was to study, appreciate, sustain and celebrate the history, people, and places of the Juniata River Valley. Currents of the Juniata Valley (CJV) facilitated scholarly research, provided an interactive educational website, and hosted public programs to encourage understanding and a shared sense of place among area residents. In 2007, it was decided that the project would be redesigned and given a new home at Beeghly Library. We've retained portions of the project's website; its content and design were produced by high school students at the Pennsylvania Governor's School for Information Technology in 2002 and 2005, and by Juniata College students in 2006-2008.
Betty Ann Cherry, professor emerita of history at Juniata College, served as the executive director of CJV; Nancy Shedd, past director of the Huntingdon County Historical Society, was a dedicated member of the executive committee. Both women actively worked to promote and improve the project throughout its duration, and we extend our thanks to them and to all of the committee members from both the college and the community for their efforts to bring the history of the Juniata Valley to a wider audience.
