Sō Percussion and the Calder Quartet
Nov 11, 7:30pm, Rosenberger Auditorium, Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts.
Performing new masterworks, So Percussion and the Calder Quartet are two of the fastest rising chamber groups in contemporary classical music. Whether they are performing Mozart at Carnegie Hall, Indie Rock with on "the Tonight Show" with Jay Leno, or new chamber music at the Barbican in London, both ensembles continue to expand their unique array of projects by performing traditional repertoire as well as partnering with innovative modern composers.
Since coming together at the Yale School of Music in 1999, So Percussion has been creating music that is at turns raucous and touching, barbarous and heartfelt. Realizing that percussion instruments can communicate all the extremes of emotion and musical possibility, it has not been an easy music to define. Called "astonishing and entrancing" by Billboard Magazine, "brilliant" by the New York Times, the Brooklyn based quartet's innovative work with today's most exciting composers and their own original music has quickly helped them forge a unique and diverse career.
Inspired by the innovative American artist Alexander Calder, the Calder Quartet continues to expand its unique array of projects by performing traditional quartet repertoire as well as partnering with innovative modern composers, emerging musicians, and performers across genres. The group was awarded the 2009 ASCAP Adventurous Programming Award in recognition of its exciting programming and collaborations.
