Intern of the Month

Joel Rhodes obtained an internship in Ireland at the University College Cork as a Research Project Assistant for Dr. Deborah Chapman. His main duties included surveying and characterizing the Lauragh Salt Marsh Lagoon on the Beara Peninsula, Co. Kerry. The surveys conducted included the measuring of bathymetry, stream flow, salinity, tidal and depth differences, flora, and fauna. The results were then mapped using a Geographic Information System.
According to Joel, his best experience at UCC was, “Getting real-world experience in my field in a very scenic area of Ireland.” This internship also extended his study abroad experience in Ireland. Joel wished he could have stayed longer to extend his research project and background readings on his studies.
Joel will graduate Juniata in 2013 with a POE in Environmental Studies. Rhodes was very pleased with his results from the research in Ireland and after making connections with those he worked with, he was glad to have taken this opportunity.
