Biology

General Overview

Biology is the study of life from the simplest forms of plants and animals (including one-celled animals and algae) to the highly complex structure of the human being. It includes the study of how organisms are structured as well as how they function and relate to each other. Among the major branches of biology are human anatomy and physiology; botany (the study of plants); microbiology (the study of microscopic organisms); zoology (the study of animals); and ecology (the study of the relationship between organisms and the environment). With Biology as a focus, students may pursue any of several major programs in pre-professional education, such as pre-medical, pre-dental, pre-optometry, or pre-veterinary. Other students choose to concentrate on ecology and the environment, cell and molecular biology, medical technology and other allied health areas, secondary teaching, or other areas of life science.
