Background Information:

The Department of Music provides opportunities for students to improve their understanding of music as a form of creative expression, as well as the opportunity for furthering of one’s performance skills, from beginners through advanced levels. Departmental courses and ensembles offer students the chance to develop abilities to perceive the subtleties of musical expression, to approach music as a reflection of the cultures in which it is found, to perform of some of the greatest literature in our artform, and to develop new, lifelong friendships. The department is very popular and active, serving over 350 musicians each semester. Juniata does not offer a POE or secondary emphasis in Music. Our emphasis is non-vocational music training.

Special programs, facilities, or equipment:

  • Concert Choir: performs a variety of choral music. Performances include on-campus programs, an annual Spring Tour, weekend tour, and recording.
  • Women's Chamber Choir: performs a variety of SSAA choral music from Renaissance to contemporary, both on- and off-campus.
  • Choral Union: performs larger works to develop choral skills in a supportive environment. One major on-campus performance per semester.
  • Wind Symphony: performs a variety of literature for wind band, concert band, chamber wind ensembles, and, increasingly, supplies selected players to participate in one or more full orchestra pieces along with Sinfonia (our string ensemble).  One concert per semester.
  • "Sinfonia" : a chamber ensemble for orchestral strings (pianists, winds and percussionists are occasionally added for certain literature).
  • Chamber Ensembles: vary from semester to semester; offshoots of the Wind Symphony, Sinfonia, and the private studios. In the past, has included flute choir, clarinet choir, saxophone ensemble, horn quartet, and brass ensemble.
  • Jazz Ensemble: performs works in a big band setting, including swing standards, ballads, fusion, funk, and Latin charts. An outgrowth of the wind symphony program.
  • Yamaha piano lab: 12 electronic pianos and teacher console; used in MS 101 and 125.
  • Percussion Ensemble: an innovative ensemble that performs traditional and contemporary literature for percussion and mallet percussionists.

Courses:

MS-101   Music Fundamentals (Variable; Yearly; 3.00 Credits; F) Designed to teach students the basic tools and elements of music and its notation. Students learn to become literate in the fundamentals of music(reading and writing music notes, intervals, scales, chords, rhythms, structure...)and apply that knowledge to composition (e.g. a group project composing a brief " percussion " ensemble piece) and basic piano skills. Discussions of the importance of music in society and in education.

MS-110   Survey of Western Music (Fall; Yearly; 3.00 Credits; F) Uses the historical development of " Western " music as the basis for forming a better understanding of the art of music. Listening skills are developed over the course of the semester.

MS-112   Introduction to Aesthetic Experience (Spring; Odd Years; 3.00 Credits; F) Introduces the aesthetic experience as a phenomenon of the human condition. Emphasizes an understanding of what the aesthetic experience is and learning to maximize the experience through perception of how the elements of an art work interact. Students learn to take from art what it uniquely offers.

MS-125   Musical Acoustics (Variable; Variable; 4.00 Credits; F,N) This course covers concepts of physics as applied to music. Topics include sound and resonance, pitch and tuning systems, psychoacoustics, anatomy of the ear, workings of musical instruments, electronic music fundamentals and literature, a review of musical notation, and aural recognition of intervals and pitches. Students will design and build a musical instrument, and participate in a performance.

MS-230   History of American Popular Music (Variable; Variable; 3.00 Credits; F) This course covers popular music in America, from Revolutionary War era through modern practices. Units on mainstream pop, jazz and its ancestors, early town bands, musical theatre, country, the fragmentation of the market in the 1960's, and other topics are included. Students complete various presentations on auxiliary topics affecting the development of mainstream pop music. Prerequisites: MS110.

MS-341   Music/Classroom Teaching (Fall; Yearly; 3.00 Credits; F) Develops skills needed to incorporate music in the elementary classroom. These skills include being able to sing in tune and perform songs with consistent tempo and accurate meter; learn a new song on his/her own and play the melody on piano; lead music activities and teach a song to others; select music materials appropriate for children.

Applied Music:

Three credit hours of any MU course/studio on the same instrument, voice or in the same ensemble fulfills a Distribution requirement.  An additional three hours on the same instrument, voice or in the same ensemble used in the initial Distribution requirement fulfill a complete Distribution requirement.  (See Academic Planning: Graduation Checklist)  Regular practice outside of class is required, one public performance or jury is required each semester.

Private lessons and applied music classes are available to all students.  One-half hour lessons earn one credit and one hour lessons earn two credits. All private lessons carry a fee.

Private Instruction in Music: Regularly enrolled students who wish to take private music lessons for academic credit will be charged $670 for a two-credit, one hour per week lesson, or $335 for a one-credit, thirty-minute per week lesson.

MU-102   Brass Ensemble (Variable; Variable; 1.00 Credit; F) Performs a wide variety of brass ensemble music chosen to develop ensemble playing abilities and musicianship. Rehearsal and concert emphasize the communicative aspects of music and the development of the tools that are necessary to produce a high quality ensemble experience. Beginning through intermediate classes emphasize songs, movable chords, blues and standardized forms in the plectrum and finger picking styles. Note: Students must supply their own instruments.

Rehearsals and concerts emphasize the development of musical skills necessary to create a high quality performance experience for both players and audience. Requirements include attendance at a weekly sectional rehearsal and the full ensemble rehearsal in addition to individual preparation. Field trips to hear excellent performances by professional string artists may be offered.

MU-191   J.C.Wind Symphony (Fall & Spring; Yearly; 1.00 Credit; F) Our wind symphony is the main instrumental ensemble for winds and percussionists. The ensemble performs a variety of concert band literature chosen to develop ensemble-playing abilities and musicianship, as well as occasional chamber pieces for sections or heterogeneous groups. Rehearsals and concerts emphasize the communicative aspects of music and the development of the tools that are necessary to produce a high-quality ensemble experience. Full rehearsals are 2 1/4 hours per week and a 50 minute sectional is also required. NOTE: Wind symphony members enroll in MU 191 their first semester of membership, then 192 then 193 etc.

MU-210   Musical Improvisation (Variable; Variable; 1.00 Credit; F) This course will present the basics of musical improvisation technique. Basic jazz music theory (scales, chords) and brief historical coverage of famed improvisers (Ella, Bird, Trane, Miles, et al.) will also be included. Extensive in-class student demonstrations of improvisation skills will be expected. Practice/goal oriented jam session time outside of class is expected- 5 hours per week is recommended.

MU-495   Senior Recital I (Fall & Spring; Yearly; 2.00-4.00 Credits; F) Individual instrumental or vocal lessons for students preparing a Senior Recital. Senior status and permission of instructor and Music Department Chairman required. The Senior Recital shall be presented at the end of the second semester of study and shall consist of 45-60 minutes of memorized literature, demonstrating the highest level of technical and musical accomplishment. Senior Recital carries normal studio per credit fees.
