Sequential SmArt will bring together creators of comics and graphic books, scholars from a range of disciplines who teach using comics, and an audience of educators who work with students from early childhood to the college level. The conference will be held May 18-19, 2012, at Juniata College in beautiful Huntingdon, Pennsylvania.
Keynote addresses will be given by Matt Madden (author of Drawing Words and Writing Pictures and co-editor of The Best American Comics) and by Eric Shanower (author of Age of Bronze, two-time winner of the Eisner Award—the Oscars for comics and graphic books—as Best Writer-Artist).
We invite proposals for twenty-minute presentations on topics such as:
- Innovative ways in which comics can help explain topic in all sorts of disciplines, including the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities;
- How creating comics can teach writing and foster literacy;
- How specific comics can address state educational standards;
- How the analysis of comics can reveal themes and patterns that illustrate a society and culture at a particular time;
- Linking research in the scholarship of teaching and learning to the use of comics in the classroom.
