Ways to Alleviate the Symptoms Associated with a Common Cold
Don't treat a cold with antibiotics.
- Colds are viral infections. As a result, antibiotics, which are used to treat bacterial infections, will not alleviate the symptoms associated with common colds.
Don't Smoke
- Smoking irritates the nasal passage and may increase the infected individual's risk of developing bronchitis and/or pneumonia.
DO gargle with salt water.
- Gargling with salt water helps to reduce swelling of the throat.
DO get plenty of rest.
DO take aspirin or acetaminophen.
- Taking aspirin or acetaminophen eases aches and fevers associated with the common cold.
DO use disposable tissues.
DO inhale warm, moist air.
- Inhaling warm, moist air soothes mucous membranes that may have become inflamed as a result of a cold.
DO drink large quantities of liquids.
