Assistant Dean of Students

Primary Role

Works with the Dean of Students, faculty, and academic support services staff to design, promote implement and evaluate programs and services that contribute to and support student learning and personal development. Focus areas include orientation, transition to college life, judicial affairs and discipline, and adult student support.


Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Plan, promote, implement and evaluate a range of programs including the Extended Orientation component of the College Writing Seminar, convocations, orientation, and educational programs and speakers designed to foster learning, community awareness and responsibility.
  2. Coordinates the student judicial process including interviewing alleged offenders and witnesses, conducting administrative hearings, facilitating judicial board hearings, and communicating judicial dispositions.
  3. Counsel students on a range of social and academic concerns as well as personal problems. Facilitates student support and problem solving by advising students on process and talking with faculty, staff, coaches, resident advisors, and parents.
  4. Works with the Dean and student affairs officers to plan, organize, and evaluate the mission, goals, programs and services of the student affairs division.
  5. Serves on, and sometimes convenes, various committee and task force initiatives on issues of retention, international programs, diversity, alcohol, etc.
  6. Serves with the Dean and other student services officers in the "dean on duty" 24-hour paging program.
  7. Performs related duties as assigned.

 

Supervision Required/Given

Receives general direction and guidance while working with independent discretion. Directs the efforts of numerous student staff.


Position Qualifications

  1. Knowledge and abilities normally acquired through at least a Master's Degree in some aspect of student personnel, counseling, higher education, or academic field in the liberal arts tradition.
  2. At least three years of related experience sufficient to demonstrate competency and capability with student counseling/advising, student services program design, implementation and evaluation, staff supervision, and budget preparation and management.
  3. Must work collaboratively and cooperatively with diverse individuals and groups including administrators, faculty, staff, students, and parents.
