Director of Academic Support Services
Student advocate, advisor, counselor, and administrator in a collaborative role working toward student learning and success.
Typical Duties & Responsibilities
- Works with faculty and staff to assist students who need academic help. Provides counseling, mentoring, coaching, and support services to assist conditionally admitted and other needy students.
- Monitors students' academic performances and behavior. Follows up with students to support their efforts and to bring needed resources to bear.
- Advises students regarding course registration and course work, study skills, time management, test taking, and personal issues.
- Helps plan and deliver academic orientation to new students and their families. Prepares and assists faculty, advisors, and staff with orientation roles.
- Trains (preparation of materials and presentation of same) or assists in the training of: peer tutors, summer orientation faculty, summer orientation leaders, freshman advisors, Extended Orientation assistants, new faculty and administration, faculty and staff preparing for academic advising, peer academic advisors, the Academic Judicial Board, residential life staff, and others.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Works independently and under general guidelines and directions. Must work cooperatively and collaboratively with diverse individuals and groups. Supervises a small support and student assistant staff; monitors the work of 100+ peer tutors.
- Knowledge and capabilities normally acquired through a Master's Degree.
- At least two years administrative experience in a college or business setting, sufficient to demonstrate proficiency in: counseling and advising undergraduate students on their
academic performance, ability to maintain discretion in highly confidential matters, public speaking, writing skills, collaborative problem solving, and PC office applications.
