Director of Planned Giving

 

Primary Role

Focus upon strengthening and maintaining relationships through cultivating, soliciting and providing stewardship of deferred gifts from individuals, including planning and executing gift agreements consistent with donor objectives, College policy and tax requirements.

Typical Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Identifies and meets with donors and prospective donors for cultivation of relationships, solicitation and gift planning. Listens to needs and priorities of donors. Communicates needs and goals of College. Routinely follows up and communicates with prospects and donors.
  2. Prepares and presents gift proposals and giving strategies to prospective donors in accordance with donor objectives and tax laws using cash, real estate, securities, retirement assets, life insurance and other valuable assets.
  3. Manages the College's planned gifts pertaining to the development of relationships, gift agreements and gift pipeline to include bequests, bequest intentions, charitable gift annuities, pooled income gifts, charitable remainder trusts and lead trusts. Insures preparation and execution of appropriate legal documents. Conducts planned giving campaigns for College.
  4. Researches and reports on federal and state regulations relating to various gifting vehicles and tax law changes impacting deferred gifts.
  5. Plans, organizes and delivers gift planning presentations and training sessions in which giving programs, estate planning and tax implications of giving are explained.
  6. Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervision Required/Given

Works independently with discretion and judgment as to how best to achieve College goals. Must work collaboratively and cooperatively with numerous and diverse individuals and groups. Provides guidance, skill development and career support to development team. Promotes teamwork and communication. Direct supervisory responsibility for one or two persons and budget responsibility for planned giving.

Position Qualifications

  1. Knowledge and abilities normally acquired through the completion of at least a Bachelor's Degree. Additional training and education in estate planning, tax planning and associated legal requirements highly desirable.
  2. At least five years experience in charitable gift programs sufficient to demonstrate competency and capabilities with gift proposal design, estate, gift and tax planning, solicitation of gifts, and budget management.
  3. Must be willing to travel extensively and work non-traditional hours.
  4. Computer literacy with the knowledge and understanding of the Microsoft Office Suite, Internet research, gift proposal software and database management.
