Special Assistant to the President for Diversity and Inclusion

Primary Role

Promote intercultural understanding and diversity in all College areas.

 

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Maintain and implement recruitment and retention strategies to meet strategic planning goals. Assists enrollment with campus visits and involves alumni, faculty and current students in recruitment and retention efforts.
  2. Coordinate and implement campus-wide activities promoting intercultural skills and understanding. Must advise several student-run organizations with ties to multicultural affairs. Plans and implements campus-wide convocation celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther king Jr.
  3. Serve as a liaison between the College and underrepresented student families.
  4. Work collaboratively with Assistant Dean of Students to coordinate first year programs, especially Plexus.
  5. Chair the Diversity and Inclusion Committee and actively listens to and addresses concerns from across campus. Actively participate in college committees with multicultural affiliation.
  6. Works with student financial planning in ensuring appropriate resources are available.
  7. Maintains working relationship with community based organizations that foster multicultural understanding and professional development.
  8. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Supervision Required/Given

Works independently and with considerable latitude and judgment. Must work collaboratively and cooperatively with groups from many different cultures and across campus. Supervises student assistants and project staff.

 

Position Qualifications

  1. Knowledge and abilities normally acquired through a Bachelor's Degree, preferably from a liberal arts college and 2 years experience in the field. Master’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  2. Strong interpersonal and intercultural communication skills.
  3. Experience with recruitment and retention strategies for traditionally underrepresented populations of students and staff.
  4. Detail-oriented experience with strategic planning and campus programming.
  5. Effective budgeting and basic statistical computation is necessary.
  6. Strong written and oral communication skills. Comfort with presentations to classrooms and large campus audiences.
  7. Experience with diversity, bi lingual or bi cultural programming
  8. Valid driver's license and willingness to travel.
