Natural Resources of Huntingdon County

forest

Pennsylvania has the most abundant hardwood reserve in the nation, with nearly 27 million acres of forestland, nearly 16 million acres of which are available for timber production. The major hardwood species found in Appalachia include red and white oak, cherry, hard and soft maple, hickory, poplar, ash, walnut, beech, and basswood.

Pennsylvania ranks first in hardwood production, with about 10% of Pennsylvania's total manufacturing workforce and 14% of the total manufacturing facilities related to the wood products industry. Central Pennsylvania offers NHLA certified graders and professional foresters in support of this vital industry.

Appalachia's Huntingdon County enjoys 560,000 acres of land, with forests covering more than 400,000 of those acres. Over 2/3 of that forested land is privately owned, with only 5% currently owned by the forest industry.

The county also boasts a quality of life surpassed by none; a quiet country atmosphere, plenty of outdoor space, including miles of hiking and biking trails, some of the best fishing in the nation, the Jewel of Central Pennsylvania - Raystown Lake, and people who will make you feel welcome and right at home.*
