Curriculum
In 2005, Juniata was selected by the Coleman Foundation as one of 12 schools across the country to receive support for entrepreneurial curriculum development. An entrepreneurial team comprised of educators from JCEL, faculty members and students was developed to support experiential and hands on learning. The activities undertaken to date by the team have fallen into three general areas:
Enhancing Entrepreneurial Courses
During 2005-2006, real life entrepreneurs and service providers have been integrated into courses such as Hands On Enterprise Leadership Lab (1 credit) and New Venture Creation (3 credits). Taught by Professor Jim Donaldson, these experiential learning courses are part of the POE in Entrepreneurship.
Pat Weaver's Cost Accounting class (3 credits) also gained exposure to entrepreneurs, learning accounting principles through their hands on work with student and community member entrepreneurs.
In 2006-2007 faculty members will continue to enhance the course content of New Venture Start-Up (3 credits) and Cost Accounting.
Reaching Non-Business Students
Faculty members from across the disciplines have been incorporating entrepreneurs, service providers and JCEL lectures and workshops into their courses. During 2005-2006 the following faculty members have been connecting their students to the world of entrepreneurship...as it relates to their disciplines:
- Dr. Marlene Burkhardt - Information Technology - Managing Advanced Technologies, IT110
- Dr. Neil Pelkey - Environmental Sciences and Studies / Information Technology - IT110
- Sarah Worley - Communications - Message Analysis.
JCEL also has been presenting discipline-related lectures and workshops to students in Biology, Chemistry and Computer Science.
In 2006-2007 three additional non-business faculty members will be connecting their students to entrepreneurship.
Strengthening the Entrepreneurial Culture
In October 2005 a group of five students traveled to the Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization (CEO) Conference in Orlando, Florida.
