ŇConsumerismÓ – Fast Food Nation

Fall 2006

A.  Picking databases

From the libraryŐs Databases page – Social Sciences
**Choose the area of social science according to your aspect of consumerism
(Business may cover most, but also Psychology, Political Science, Sociology,
Communication, Education, etc.  Some Science databases may be used for Health
        or agriculture.)

Good General Databases = ProQuest (Research Library), Sociological Abs.,
                                           Social Science Abs, & more

Good Specific Databases: ABI/Inform (in ProQuest)(business), Wilson
       Business, Education Abs, & more

DonŐt hesitate to ask a librarian for help!!!

B.  Search tips and ideas

Try using a variety of search terms and their various word forms

              Consumer/Consumerism/Consumer attitudes/Consumer behavior
              Marketing/Market research/Advertising/Media
Industry (maybe food industry or fast food industry)
**Remember – the plural may yield very different results than singular!

Be persistent!

You may have to use many different search terms until you find what works in
a particular database – they all work differently.
You may have to use a variety of databases too!

Take notes of your searching process – it will make you a more efficient, more effective searcher.

C.  Retrieving articles

If the database you search doesnŐt link you to the full text of an article, use the AtoZ Holdings List to determine if Juniata College has access to the journal title of the article.
