Eagles Off to Good Start in 2004

Chris Sheaffer paced the Juniata men\'s team to a solid finish at the Penn State Spiked Shoe Invitational

University Park, Pa. ? The Juniata College men?s and women?s cross country teams posted a pair of strong finishes at the Penn State Spiked Shoe Invitational in University Park Saturday afternoon. The Juniata women placed 11th out of the 17-team field, including besting a pair of MAC rivals, while the men?s squad placed 17th out of 18 teams. Princeton was the top finishing team in the men?s race, while Penn State raced home first on the women?s side.

Katey Glunt (Bellefonte/Bellefonte) was the top finisher for Juniata for the second-consecutive week as she came home 43rd in the race. She covered the six kilometer course in less than 24 minutes, which transfers to a personal best effort at the 5K distance. Elena Amato (Notre Dame Prep/Baltimore, Md.) also put together a personal best race as she finished 57th overall. Coming home third for Juniata was Lauren Gates (Bishop Guilfoyle/Altoona) who placed 76th for the Eagles. Gates also ran a personal-best time. Sarah Bay (Central Dauphin/Harrisburg) placed fourth among Juniata harriers with an 85th-place finish, and Lia Bella (Morris Catholic/Rockaway, N.J.) rounded out the top-five by finishing 103rd.

Molly Landreth of Penn State was the top overall finisher on the women?s side.

Running a 5.2 mile course, Chris Sheaffer (Central York/York) was the top finisher for the Juniata men. Sheaffer placed 84th coming home in a time of 28:28.97. Justin Fritzius (Central York/York) followed up Sheaffer with a 102nd-place finish. Right on his heels was freshman Shawn Rummery (Thornton Academy/, Dayton, Me.) who ran the best race of his collegiate career as he placed 105th. Sophomore Mike Chirdon (Riverview/Verona) ran one of the top races of his career as he placed 111th overall and fourth on the Juniata team. Placing fifth for the Eagle team was freshman Ryan Conrad (Waynesboro/Waynesboro).

Macharia Yuot of Widener was the top finisher in the men?s race.
