Eagles Outlast Several Conference Opponents

Nancy Hayes posted a strong 32nd-place finish to help the Eagle women to an eighth-place finish at the LaSalle Invitational

Philadelphia, Pa. ? Getting its first look at a number of the MAC foes that they will face at the MAC Championships later this month, the Juniata College men?s and women?s cross country teams both put together strong performances at the LaSalle University Invitational in Philadelphia Saturday afternoon. The Eagle women finished eighth out of a field of 14 squads and the men?s team placed ninth in a 12-team field.

WOMEN'S

Katey Glunt (Bellefonte/Bellefonte) led Juniata once again as the team?s top finisher. Glunt placed 24th overall and led the Eagle team in a time of 20:08.70 over the 5K course. Teammate Nancy Hayes (Westminster/Westminster, Md.) was Juniata?s second-place finisher as she placed 32nd overall and covered the course in a time of 20:24.90. Elena Amato?s (Notre Dame Prep/Baltimore, Md.) time of 21:13.30 was good for 54th-place overall. Lauren Gates (Bishop Guilfoyle/Altoona) was Juniata?s fourth runner, placing 59th in the race with a time of 21:24. Finally Sarah Bay (Central Dauphin/Harrisburg) ran home in a time of 21:30 to place 64th overall and fifth for Juniata.
Vanessa Andes of East Stroudsburg was the overall winner on the women?s side as she finished with a time of 18:17.20.

MEN?S

The Juniata men were led by a familiar duo as Chris Sheaffer (Central York/York) and Justin Fritzius (Central York/York) led the Eagles and finished 38th and 39th respectively. Sheaffer finished in a time of 27:31, just two seconds ahead of his teammate?s 27:33 time. Shawn Rummery (Thornton Academy/Dayton, Me.) was the third Eagle man to cross the line 51st in a time of 27:59. Mike Vella (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) covered the 8K course in a time of 28:46 which earned him the fourth spot on the Eagle team and a 62nd-place finish overall. Rounding out the top-five for Juniata was Ryan Conrad (Waynesboro/Waynesboro) who finished in 69th-place with a time of 29:03.

The top finisher on the men?s side was Macharia Yout of Widener who ran a time of 25:31.

The Eagles will run at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational in Pittsburgh next weekend.
