Eagle Men\'s Basketball Player Earns Weekly Conference Honor
(Posted January 10, 2005)
Huntingdon, PA - Juniata College junior forward Travis Boyd (Juniata Valley/Barree) has been named the Commonwealth Conference men's basketball player of the week after helping the Eagles to a pair of victories. It is the first basketball player of the week honor for Juniata this season, and the first time in his career that Boyd has been honored by the conference.
Boyd put together two of his best performances of the season as the Eagles earned road victories over Westminster and Thiel. He closed the week by matching his career high with 26 points, and establishing a new career-high with 15 rebounds against Westminster. He was 8-for-16 from the field and 8-of-9 from the foul line in the game, while also passing out a team-high five assists. Boyd recorded also posted a "double-double" against Thiel when he scored a team-high 21 points, and pulled down 12 rebounds. He added an assist, a block and a steal in the game, while shooting 63-percent from the field, and 57-percent from three-point range. The two contests marked the first time in his career that Boyd topped the 20-point mark in back-to-back games, and were also the first back-to-back double-digit rebounding performances of his career. For the week he averaged 23.5 points and 13.5 rebounds per game.
For the season Boyd has emerged as a go-to scorer for the Eagles, as he leads the team with a 12.4 points per game average. He has scored in double figures in eight of Juniata's last 10 contests and has averaged 15.3 points per game during that stretch. His rebounding average of 7.3 boards per game is also best on the team, and ranks him fifth in the Commonwealth Conference. He is the only Eagle to have started all twelve of the team's games, and is currently second among the regulars with a 43-percent field goal percentage. He has knocked down a team-best 24 threes this season, while shooting 31-percent from beyond the arc.
With Boyd leading the way, Juniata has been on a recent surge as the team prepares to enter the heart of its conference schedule. Juniata has won four of its last five games, to improve its overall record to 5-7. Juniata returns to action Tuesday night as the Eagles play on the road at conference opponent Elizabethtown.
