Myrtle Beach, S.C. ? After a rocky start to the day with an 11-0 set-back at the hands of Regis College, the Juniata College softball team regrouped and posted a 9-3 victory over Penn State-Altoona on the second day of competition at the Snowbird Softball Tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Juniata has now split its pair of games on both days of the tournament, to have a 2-2 mark through four games.

After pushing across a run in the top of the second, to take a 1-0 lead against Penn State-Altoona, the Eagles extended the lead with a three-run third inning. Natalie Buzin (Central Bucks East/Jamison) doubled home Leann Leymeister (Blue Mountain/Orwigsburg) to cap the inning and put Juniata in front 4-0. Doubles from Allison D?Ambrosia (State College/Boalsburg) and Leymeister the following inning pushed across two more runs, and gave the Eagles a comfortable 6-0 edge.

That was plenty for freshman pitcher Kim Stoia (Morris Hills/Rockaway, N.J.) who tossed four innings of one run ball to collect her first win. She limited the home team to one hit in her four innings while striking out four.

Penn State-Altoona began to mount a comeback in the bottom of the fifth as they pushed across a pair of runs to cut the Eagle lead to 6-3. Juniata then responded with three runs in the top of the sixth as Kim Wagner (Middletown/Middletown) and Renae Hobbs (Mount Union/Mount Union) both singled and scored as the Eagles pulled away for the win.

Hobbs paced the Eagle offense with a pair of hits and two runs scored in the game.

In the first game of the day, Juniata fell behind early when Regis scored one run in the top of the first. The visitors then took control with a six-run third inning.

Juniata could not get its offense going in the game as the Eagles managed just a pair of hits in five innings. Marcie White (Central Dauphin East/Dauphin) roped a double in the second inning, but was stranded at second base. And then Buzin added a double in the fourth only to have the next three runners retired in order.

Regis would tack on another two runs in the fourth, and then two more in the fifth to take the game by an 11-0 score.

Lizzie Bartosik (Penn/Granger, In.) was saddled with the loss for Juniata, while Veronica Coles captured the win.

The Eagles will play another pair of games on Wednesday as they will take on Crown College and Villa Julie College.
