Eagles Soccer Women Suffer Conference Loss

Freshman keeper Kerri Lawrence made a season-best 10 saves for the Eagles in a conference match against Susquehanna.

Huntingdon, Pa. ? The Juniata College women?s soccer team played a strong offensive and defensive match in its conference opener against Susquehanna University Wednesday afternoon, but it was the visiting Crusaders who were able to find the back of the net as the Eagles fell in the match by a 3-0 score. Juniata fell to 2-6-1 with the loss while Susquehanna improved to 4-5. The match was the conference opener for both teams.

The visitors controlled the play in the first half, but Juniata keeper Kerri Lawrence (Paramus Catholic/Waldwick, N.J.) recorded six saves to keep Juniata in the match.

The lone blemish n the first half came on a free kick from Alecia Gold which just went under the crossbar with 19:07 gone in the first half.

Juniata would turn up its offensive pressure early in the second half, as they registered eight shots in the final 45 minutes. Several of the attempts threatened to knot the score, but Kim Wild made five saves in the second half to preserve the lead.

With Juniata pressing for the equalizer, the visitors were able to break through and add to the goal total. Becky Smedley broke free in the box and slid home Susquehanna?s second goal in the 73rd minute. Gold assisted on the score.

The Crusaders added the final score with less than five minutes remaining when Lawrence was unable to clear a free kick and the ball came down on the feet of Erin Goffey who drove it into the goal.

Lawrence kept the Eagles in the match throughout as she recorded a career-high 10 saves in the match. Wild finished with six saves in the match.

The Eagles get back in action on Saturday with a home match against conference foe Moravian.
