Eagles Volleyball Downs Fourth-Ranked LaVerne

Amber Thomas matched a season-high with 20 kills and established a new season-high with 17 digs as Juniata topped LaVerne.

For the fifth time this season the Juniata College women's volleyball team took on a team ranked in the AVCA Division III Top-25 poll, and for the fourth time the Eagles earned the win, this time posting a 3-1 victory over fourth-ranked LaVerne Saturday night in Claremont, Ca. The Eagles improved to 17-1 win the win, while LaVerne fell to 11-6.

The win marked the second Juniata victory over LaVerne this season. The Eagles claimed the tight victory by game scores of 32-30, 31-33, 30-24, 31-29. Juniata, which is currently ranked second in Division III, has also defeated fifth-ranked Wittenberg and 14th-ranked Trinity this season.

Freshman Amber Thomas was one of four Juniata players to reach double figures in kills, as she matched her season-best with 20 kills. Stephanie kines added 16 finishes in the match while Rachael Schatz and Katie Laucks each had 14.

Beth Kozak passed out 54 assists for the Eagles, while adding 13 digs. Juniata finished with 102 digs on the match, and the defense limited the Leopards to a .112 hitting percentage. Tara McMinn had a team-high 24 digs while Thomas added 17 to go with her 20 kills. Abby Leonard finished with 16 digs and Kristi Fitzsimmons posted 14.

Kines led the Eagles with four blocks in the match, while Aly Pompeani and Laucks both had three.

Juniata continues play on its California trip with a match at Chapman College on Sunday.
