Huntingdon, Pa. ? The Juniata College field hockey team played third-ranked Messiah College to a standstill for more than 95 minutes but was unable to score the decisive goal before falling to the Falcons 1-0 in sudden-death overtime in Huntingdon Thursday afternoon. The conference set-back moved Juniata?s record to 3-3 in the Commonwealth Conference and 8-7 overall. The Falcons raised their mark to 12-2 on the season, and 5-0 in the conference.

After back-and-forth action through regulation and both overtimes, Messiah scored the game winner off its 17th penalty corner. Ashley Lobach took a pass on the right side of the scoring circle, moved to her right and fired a low shot that that just found its way into the cage. Aftan Fisher assisted on the goal.

The score came after both teams had chances throughout regulation and overtime. Juniata keeper Andrea Way (Fair Haven Union/Fair Haven, Vt.) made seven saves in the match, including a spectacular diving save late in regulation to help preserve the 0-0 score. Juniata was out-shot 21-12 for the match, but the visitors managed just two more shots on goal in the contest.

Juniata managed 12 shots in the match, including two in the first overtime period. Kim Wagner (Middletown/Middletown) broke away for the Eagles? best chance in the extra session, but Messiah goalkeeper Renee Herbster came rushing off her line and knocked the ball away just inside the scoring circle.

Most of Juniata?s strong chances in the first half came on penalty corners. The Eagles earned two corners in the first half, and then finished the match with five.

Wagner finished with five of Juniata?s 12 shots in the match.

Juniata gets back into action with a non-conference match as the Eagles travel to take on Washington & Lee.
