Elizabethtown, Pa. ? Needing a victory to clinch a spot in the Commonwealth Conference postseason, the Juniata College field hockey team got off to a strong start with an early goal, but could not hang on for the win as the Eagles suffered a 3-1 set-back to Elizabethtown College Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles drop to 8-10 on the year and 3-4 in conference play, while the Blue Jays brought their record to 12-4 on the year, and 4-3 in the conference.

Elizabethtown clinched the fourth postseason spot in the conference postseason, the first appearance for the Blue Jays since 2002.

On a cold and damp day, the Eagles got off to a hot start out-shooting the home team 3-2 in the first 35 minutes and claimed the early lead with a goal just before halftime. Erin Smith (Palmyra/Palmyra) scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Michelle Campbell (Northern Lebanon/Annville).

The second half was a completely different story as the Blue Jays scored three unanswered goals to take control of the match. The first game 15 minutes after halftime as Megan Angstadt scored an unassisted score to tie the match at one. Just three minutes later, Brandy Spriggle gave the home team a 2-1 lead with another unassisted score. Angstadt then capped the scoring in the 64th minute, taking a pass from Laura Rinck and recorded her second goal.

Juniata continued to push offensively, firing off a pair of shots in the second half, but were unable to find the back of the goal. Andrea Way (Fair Haven Union/Fair Haven, Vt.) made four saves in goal to keep Juniata in the match.

Kristen Callaghan made one save in goal for Elizabethtown in the match.

Juniata will close its regular season with a non-conference match against Christopher Newport on Saturday in Huntingdon.
