JUNIATA SWIMMING FALLS JUST SHORT IN SEASON OPENER

Chester, Pa. ? The Juniata College women?s swimming team got a number of strong performances that point towards a promising season, but it wasn?t enough to earn a victory as the Eagles dropped a tight 100-98 dual-meet against perennial conference power Widener. The match was the season opener for both teams.

Amy Sutherland (Norwich/Norwich, N.Y.) got her season off to a strong start as she earned one of three individual first-place finishes for Juniata by placing first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:05.16. Just minutes later, freshman Kristin Musselman (Central Columbia/Bloomsburg) captured a first-place finish in her first collegiate race, touching the wall first in the 50 freestyle. The freshman posted a time of 25.99 in the race.

Rounding out Juniata?s first-place efforts was Jenny Bair (Huntingdon/Huntingdon) who placed first with a time of 1:13.82 in the 100 breaststroke.

Juniata also earned a victory in the 400 freestyle relay as Musselman was joined by Collin Thompson (Altoona/Altoona), Rachel Almy (Foxcroft Academy/Charleston, Me.) and Kasey Brough (Carlisle/Gardner) to earn the win.

Though the team finished with only four first-place efforts, the Eagles did manage to finish second, third and fourth in a number of events.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they host Randolph-Macon for the first home meet of the season.
