(Posted November 12, 2005)
Annville, Pa. ? After a tough, hard-fought meet against one of the top teams in the conference on Friday night, it wouldn?t have been surprising to see the Juniata College women?s swimming team struggle in its MAC tri-meet against Lebanon Valley College and Drew University on Saturday. Instead, the Eagles rebounded with convincing victories over both teams, topping Lebanon Valley 65-56 and defeating Drew 91-30. The victories improved Juniata to 3-2 on the season and 2-2 in MAC contests.
The Eagles picked up eight first-place finishes in individual races on the day, with two athletes claiming two first-place efforts. Collin Thompson (Altoona/Altoona) earned first place in the 200 backstroke with a new lifetime best swim, while also adding a first-place finish in the 100 backstroke.
Amy Sutherland (Norwich/Norwich, N.Y.) also touched the wall first on a pair of occasions, winning both the 800 freestyle and the 100 freestyle. Her time in the 800 established a new pool record.
Senior Amy Hanson (Lancaster Catholic/Elizabethtown) produced a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle swimming the sixth-fastest time in Juniata history in the event. It was the first time the senior had ever swam that particular event. Carli Zoubek (Paul IV/Burke, Va.) added a first-place effort in the 200 butterfly for Juniata. Kasey Brough (Carlisle/Gardners) was the top finisher in the 200 freestyle and Jenny Bair (Huntingdon/Huntingdon) rounded out the first-place efforts with a win in the 200 breaststroke.
Juniata added six second-place efforts on the day with Sam Monty (Plattsburgh/Plattsburgh, N.Y.) providing two of them and Kim Dierolf (Boyertown/Boyertown) and Kristin Musselman (Central Columbia/Bloomsburg) each adding one. Bair and Zoubek each also had a runner-up finish to go with their victories.
Juniata returns to action on Saturday with a meet at the University of Scranton.
