Eagles Ladies Hoops Falls to Thomas More

(Posted November 18, 2005)

Thomas More 87, Juniata 62

Wilmington, Ohio ? A cold offensive stretch for eight minutes of the first half proved to be the difference as the Juniata College women?s basketball team dropped an 87-62 decision to Thomas More College in the first day of action at the Wilmington College Tip-off Tournament. Juniata will now play Pitt-Bradford in the consolation game on Saturday, while Thomas Moore will face host Wilmington in the championship game.

Jess Winemiller (Dallastown/York) scored a game-high 24 points, but Juniata was unable to overcome a poor scoring stretch late in the first half. The Eagles took an early lead in the game, and then answered a Thomas More run to take the lead again 14-13 with 12 minutes left after a three-point play by Winemiller. But Juniata managed just four points over the next eight minutes as Thomas More turned the one-point deficit into a 20-point lead with three minutes left in the half. A Winemiller three broke the drought but Thomas More would take its largest lead 47-26 going into halftime.

Juniata played the opponent nearly straight up in the second half, but were unable to overcome the large first-half deficit. A pair of Winemiller baskets cut the lead to 17 early in the second stanza, but Thomas More pushed the lead back to 21 with 10:22 remaining, and kept Juniata down by 20 or more the rest of the way.

Katie O?Brien (South Western/Hanover) was also in double figures for Juniata with 12 points while adding a team-high eight rebounds. Ali Meckey (Bishop Carroll/Ebensburg) chipped in 11 points for Juniata.
Alex Gee paced Thomas More with 15 points, while Amanda Link contributed 14. Megan Wood finished with six rebounds and six assists.
