(Posted January 13, 2006)
Huntingdon, PA - Tom Gibboney, a former Juniata College head coach and longtime native of Huntingdon, has been named an assistant coach for both the Juniata football and baseball programs according to Director of Athletics Larry Bock.
"Coach Gibboney has a wealth of college football coaching experience and is very well respected by former Juniata players," Juniata football Head Coach Darrell Alt said. "We're certain that with his knowledge and passion for the game that he will be an excellent addition to our staff."
Gibboney brings more than 25 years of coaching experience to the Juniata football program where he will serve as the team's defensive coordinator. He is no stranger to the Juniata program as he served as the head coach for Juniata from 1995-1998. Juniata was 10-19-1 during his three-year tenure including a 5-5 season in 1996 which was the first time Juniata finished at .500 or better in the '90s. He was also an assistant baseball coach at Juniata for three seasons and helped guide the 1998 team to 20 wins and a berth in the conference postseason.
Most recently he spent five seasons as the defensive coordinator for Huntingdon High School and helped direct the Bearcats to three District Championships. He was the head football coach for the Bearcats from 1986-1995 before assuming the head coaching role at Juniata. Huntingdon posted 60 victories during his time as the head coach earning one District Championships and four Western Conference Championships.
Gibboney has also served as the head baseball coach for Huntingdon High School since 1999. His tenure included a State Championship in 2000 along with a state runner-up finish and two District Championships.
"Coach Gibboney has shown his abilities as a coach with his team's success on the field, but just as important is the way his former players have achieved at the college level on the field and in the classroom," Juniata Head Baseball Coach George Zanic said. "He has a great understanding that wins and losses are going to be important here, but also that all the other things that encompass Juniata College are also important."
He is a 1978 graduate of Juniata as he earned a Bachelor of Science in social work.
He will join a Juniata football team that should bring 18 starters back for the fall 2006 season, while Juniata's baseball team went 25-17 last season and earned its second-consecutive Commonwealth Conference postseason berth.
