PHOENIX, Ariz. ? An offensive explosion and a pair of stellar pitching performances helped the Juniata College baseball team break into the win column with a doubleheader sweep of Commonwealth Conference foe Moravian College in Phoenix Ariz. Saturday afternoon. Juniata is now 2-3 on the season while the games were the season openers for Moravian.
The Eagles got a pair of one-run pitching efforts, and five home runs over the two games to claim the victories.
In game one, the Eagles got a victory from senior Cody Zong (Lewistown/McVeytown) who went six innings and allowed just one. Tyler Brown (Southern Huntingdon/Orbisonia) pitched the seventh to close out the win.
Moravian took the initial lead with an RBI single from Richie Cline in the top of the first. Juniata answered back with a Walt Goedkoop (Manheim Township/Lancaster) homer in the bottom of the first for a 2-1 lead and never looked back. The Eagles scored in every inning, including pushing across three runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth. Zach Sternberg (McCaskey/Lancaster) belted a pair of home runs in the game offensively for Juniata.
In game two, sophomore Paul Dunklebarger (State College/State College) picked up his first victory of the season by tossing six innings and fanning six batters.
Juniata jumped in front early in the second game, with three runs in the bottom of the first. It would remain a 3-0 game until the Eagles piled up eight runs in the bottom of the fifth. Dan Kauffman (Penn Manor/Conestoga) drilled a three-run homer and Goedkoop followed with a solo shot to spark the Eagles.
Moravian countered with solo runs in the sixth and seventh including a solo homer from Cline in the sixth, but Juniata added another run in the bottom of the sixth to finish the game.
The two teams will complete their three-game series with a full nine-inning game on Sunday.
